Properties of chalcopyrite

The vivid and varied colours of chalcopyrite are mainly due to the massive presence of copper and iron sulphate in its composition, hence its chemical formula CuFeS2.

The most dominant colours are usually purple, silver-grey, electric blue, and more rarely orange and green.

It is a more or less hard stone (3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale), with a square crystal system, also known as copper pyrite, when the copper content is higher, which is important in its composition.
