Water fasting

Water fasting, also known as total therapeutic fasting, does not allow any calorie intake.

Only water can be consumed.

You can also drink broths and teas, as the calorie intake remains minimal.

It is practised naturally by animals, depending on the availability of food, and they also fast instinctively when they are sick or injured.

These periods without food allow the body to improve its regenerative functions.

Many traditional cultures around the world advocate fasting.

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, prescribed total fasting for his patients.

Water fasting is complete (water intake) or almost complete (consumption of broths and infusions) calorie restriction.

It allows the body to rest completely.

The body has to draw on its reserves of food very quickly.

The energy used for digestion is completely redirected to the cleansing of the body.

If carried out without excess and in accordance with the person's state of health, it helps to maintain good health.

Advantages

It effectively supports the treatment of a wide range of pathologies and injuries.

This is due to its anti-inflammatory action.

The detoxification or cleansing of cellular and toxic waste that occurs on a daily basis is enhanced.

This reduces the level of inflammation and restores effective immune function.

Health benefits

It allows you to be healthier.

Resting the digestive system allows the body to regenerate.

Effects on the liver

The liver is essential in the body's detoxification process.

During a complete fast, the liver decreases in volume as it eliminates its defective cells through the process of autolysis.

Properties

  • Anti-cancer activity
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Effect on the brain
  • Effect on oxidative stress
  • Detoxification of the body

Indications

Side effects

Acid crisis is the most common side effect that occurs around the third day of the diet.

The symptoms do not usually last more than 48 hours.

Depending on the pathology, there may be a temporary increase in symptoms and pain.

Ketosis also causes bad breath.

Sweat odours may also be more pronounced.

Duration

The maximum duration of a water fast depends on several factors: weight and body fat.

It is strongly recommended not to exceed 3 weeks.

However, if carried out without medical supervision, it should not exceed 48 hours.

Procedure

Before and after

A properly performed water fast protects the body from sudden, harmful changes.

A smooth transition, first to fasting and then to eating, allows the crisis of acidosis to be mitigated and preserves the digestive system.

The descent and resumption of eating are always of the same duration as the fast.

It will be beneficial for the body to follow a hypotoxic diet for several months before starting the cure.

During the fast

You can just drink water at room temperature.

Some practitioners recommend warm saltwater to stave off hunger, especially in the first few days.

Broth fasting is recommended by other practitioners because it provides vitamins and minerals with minimal calorie intake.
