How to make a decoction?

A decoction is a 'long infusion' because it takes longer to extract the active ingredients from the more robust parts of the plant, such as the roots, berries or bark.

Method of preparation

Preparation

  • Place the plants in a glass or stainless steel pot.
  • Add a cup of water for each teaspoon of dried plants.
  • Bring to the boil and cover the pan.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and leave to cool.
  • Strain through a cotton cloth.

Conservation

  • 24 to 48 hours in the refrigerator.

Dosage

  • Generally recommended:
    • The dosage should be adjusted according to the monographs of the chosen plant:

      • For a child: 1/4 to 3/4 teaspoon per cup of water, 1 or 2 times a day - adjust according to the age and weight of the child.
