Thyme Syrup

Indications

The effect of thyme syrup against coughs is based on the essential oil contained in thyme, making the mucus thinner (fluidifying) and easier to expectorate.

Thyme also has antiseptic and antibacterial effects at the level of the respiratory system, such as in the lungs.

Ingredients

  • 4 bowls of fresh thyme (approx. 60 to 80 g). You can also use 2 bowls of dried thyme leaves (approx. 30 to 40 g).
  • If it is the season when you can buy it at a store (e.g. specialty or supermarket), it is better to use fresh thyme than dried. Some experts advise always using fresh thyme rather than dried, as it is a very effective plant.
  • 1 liter of water
  • 4 cups of honey
  • 1 pot

Preparation

  1. Place the thyme in a pot.
  2. Pour 1 liter of boiling water over it.
  3. Let it infuse for 1 day, if you are in a hurry, you can also make a simple thyme tea, skip to step 4.
  4. Filter the mixture and add the honey.
  5. Cook for 1 hour over low heat and fry (remove the foam).
  6. Cook until the honey has melted.
  7. Bottle as soon as it has cooled.

Dosage

Drink 20 ml, 3 times a day. You can also consume 5 mL every 2 or 3 hours until the cough or cold is gone.

Shelf life: in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks.

Note

You can also add some brandy to the syrup, for example, about 50 mL to 100 mL of cachaça for a 1L syrup.

In this case, you will need to avoid giving it to children.

The brandy can increase the shelf life of the syrup and promote muscle relaxation in the throat muscles.
