Of all the dietary supplements used to supplement magnesium intake, marine magnesium is often chosen for its natural character.
Marine Magnesium is a food supplement of natural origin containing various magnesium salts.
Its composition, which is more complex than that of conventional magnesium supplements, gives it special properties.
Technique of production
Marine magnesium is extracted from seawater in salt marshes.
Pure seawater has an average salinity of 3.5% (35g of salts per litre of water) and the proportions of the main components of its salts are fairly constant.
Different salts can be extracted from seawater by natural processes of evaporation and filtration:
- In salt marshes, seawater exposed to the sun evaporates and salts form crystals on the surface of the water. The first crystals collected are mainly sodium chloride (NaCl), which is used as table salt.
- The remaining water (brine), after several stages of evaporation and desalination, is highly concentrated in magnesium. It is filtered, purified and crystallised to obtain a concentration of more than 55% in the magnesium element.
The natural marine magnesium obtained contains various magnesium salts (oxides, hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates, chlorides) and is enriched with micronutrients from the sea.
Characteristics of marine magnesium
Like all food supplements containing magnesium, marine magnesium contributes to the proper functioning of the muscular and nervous systems (it participates in homeostasis).
Recommended for restoring vitality and serenity, it acts against stress, fatigue, anxiety, cramps, memory and cardiovascular balance.
Marine Magnesium has other special characteristics:
- It does not contain preservatives or chemicals.
- Its magnesium concentration is high (around 55%)
- It is composed of different inorganic salts, which makes it optimally assimilable.
- It has a good digestibility due to its natural origin
- It may contain other micronutrients (minerals, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids).
Indications
Many pharmaceutical or dietetic laboratories offer marine magnesium as a dietary supplement in various forms (tablets, capsules, ampoules) to be taken once or several times a day, depending on the composition of the product:
- You can use marine magnesium as a cure (minimum 20 days) to compensate for dietary magnesium deficiencies or losses due to stress or physical activity. These cures can be renewed if necessary.
- Magnesium taken at 368 mg per day for 3 months reduces systolic blood pressure by 2 points and diastolic blood pressure by 1.78 points.
- To be effective, the daily intake should be close to 100% of the NRV (nutritional reference value), which is 6 mg of magnesium per kilogram of body weight per day.
- Marine magnesium is sometimes combined with vitamins (B6, B1, B5, B9), amino acids (taurine, tyrosine, arginine) or essential fatty acids (omega 3) to improve its absorption or effectiveness.
Side effects and precautions for use
Marine magnesium can cause digestive problems (bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain) and diarrhoea.
These effects can be avoided by taking smaller doses throughout the day:
- It can cause allergic reactions. In this case, it is better to discontinue treatment.
- Some marine magnesium products contain iodine. Avoid if you are being treated for thyroid disease.
Their use is not recommended without medical advice:
- In people with chronic kidney failure
- With certain antibiotics (cyclins, quinolones)
- With certain osteoporosis medicines
