Lithothamnium is a red algae of the Corallinaceae family that grows in colonies on the shallow seabed (10 to 60 metres).
It is found in Brittany, England, Norway, Iceland and the Mediterranean.
It also grows in Brazil, the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic.
Composition
Rich in minerals and trace elements, Lithothamnium has many active ingredients, the most important of which are:
- Calcium carbonate: more than 30%.
- Magnesium carbonate: more than 10%.
- Sodium, potassium
- Silicon: more than 9%.
- Trace elements: iron, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, copper, iodine, molybdenum, cobalt, chromium, selenium, fluorine, sulphur, bromine, boron, etc.
- Amino acids: proline, lysine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid
- Vitamin C
- Alginates
Properties and indications
A powerful remineraliser
Lithothamnium is a remineralising seaweed for the body thanks to its richness in minerals and trace elements.
A course of treatment lasting several days or weeks can make up for mineral deficiencies.
It is also useful for supporting bone growth in children or preventing the risk of fractures in the elderly.
In terms of prevention, this seaweed is effective in combating osteoporosis, a disease characterised by increased bone porosity.
It should be noted that 40% of women in Western countries develop osteoporosis at the time of menopause.
Lithothamnium is also indicated in cases of osteoarthritis: it does not cure this disease, but helps to stabilise the degradation of cartilage.
Anti-inflammatory action
The richness of its trace elements and active ingredients gives it interesting anti-inflammatory properties in rheumatism pains, arthritis, joint and muscle disorders.
Anti-acid action
Lithothamnium has a pH of 8, which gives it antacid properties.
It helps to relieve gastric acidity caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, heartburn, ulcers... but also inflammation caused by intestinal pathologies such as Crohn's disease, colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.
Its basic pH helps to restore the body's acid-base balance by providing alkalising elements, which can also help to rebalance conditions such as candidiasis (fungal infections caused by Candida), urinary tract infections or mycoses.
Global use
The richness of its minerals gives Lithothamnium a much more general action than the virtues mentioned.
In fact, the multitude of minerals and trace elements present also influence the immune system, the proper functioning of the brain and muscles, nerve impulses and neuromuscular transmission, the oxygenation of the body's cells and the slowing down of cellular oxidation.
It seems to be a good supplement for weight loss diets, supporting weight loss.
Lithothamnium also helps to combat fatigue.
Combined with vitamin C, it contributes to well-being by preventing colds and other winter ailments such as fatigue.
By remineralising the body, it helps to revitalise it.
Dosage
Lithothamnium is taken as a food supplement.
The dosage is between 200 and 700 mg per capsule or tablet.
The amount taken depends on individual requirements.
Up to 2400 mg per day is often recommended for joint and skeletal disorders.
Respect the recommended dosages
Attention, you must respect the dosages recommended by the manufacturers and, if in doubt, do not hesitate to consult your doctor or health professional.
Precautions and contraindications
There are no contraindications, but lithothamnium has not been studied in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Lithothamnium is not recommended for people on a low salt diet, with kidney problems or a predisposition to kidney stones.
People on allopathic treatment should ask their doctor if there are any interactions with the calcium carbonate in Lithothamnium.
