Definition of the pathology

Pulmonary emphysema is a respiratory disease in which the lungs lose their elasticity, mainly due to constant exposure to pollutants or tobacco, leading to the destruction of the alveoli, the structures responsible for oxygen exchange. This process of loss of lung elasticity is gradual, which is why in most cases the symptoms are only noticed slowly.
