Illness Anxiety Disorder (Hypochondria, Hypochondriasis)

Definition of the pathology

Hypochondria is an excessive and unjustified fear of illness, with a hasty interpretation of various symptoms. Above all, the hypochondriac is afraid. This fear, strongly "psychological", without physiological damage, usually has its origin in childhood. Psychotherapy seems necessary in order to understand the processes that have generated this fear. The hypochondriac has put into practice "defensive behaviour" against his anxiety, forcing him to reassure himself by consulting, imagining a pathology that requires medical consultation, taking medication. It has become his way of dealing with his existential anxiety. It is also a way of attracting the attention of others, of materialising anxiety.
