Euphrasia officinalis

Euphrasia officinalis or Eyebright is a parasitic plant of the Figwort family that grows mainly in Europe and Asia.

Rich in chlorophyll and tannins, Euphrasia officinalis is a plant with many medicinal properties, in particular anti-inflammatory, astringent, analgesic and stimulant.

Recommended since the 14th century for the treatment of eye diseases, Euphrasia officinalis owes its name to the Greek goddess Euphrosyne, whose joy and good humour were legendary.

Long used to improve vision, it is now used in homeopathy to treat infections and inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctiva.

Main indications

Euphrasia officinalis is used to treat conjunctivitis and rhinoconjunctivitis, and to reduce the watering and irritation of the eyes often associated with allergies, coryza or pollinosis.

Euphrasia officinalis is particularly indicated when eye conditions are accompanied by swelling, burning, runny nose or excessive tearing.

It can also be used for oedematous inflammation or photophobia when the condition being treated causes extreme eye pain and fear of bright light.

Finally, Euphrasia officinalis will be more specific if the symptoms are aggravated outdoors or if the person is exposed to pollution or cigarette smoke.
