Tabacum is tobacco grown for smoking and is found in cigarettes or pipe tobacco. There are 4 varieties: blond or Virginia tobacco, brown tobacco, burley tobacco and oriental tobacco. There is also a disease called green tobacco sickness, in which farmers are poisoned with nicotine through repeated contact with wet tobacco skin and leaves.

However, it is a beautiful plant, so don't be fooled by its appearance... Large, broad green leaves (30 to 60 cm long!), yellow-green, pink or red flowers, trumpet-shaped at the top of the stem, with a particularly elongated corolla, up to 5 cm long, always greenish. Only the calyx is coloured, but it is small, only 1-2 cm.

It is as if the heart of the plant, the nectar, is particularly difficult to reach. You have to go deep into the corolla, and although the plant emits a scent that attracts pollinators, it also emits a second, nicotine-based scent, sweet and bitter, designed to repel the same pollinators so that they don't stay too long on the plant, so as not to exhaust the nectar supply.

In fact, one gets the impression that tobacco needs the other for its practicality, in this case reproduction, but that's all! It is also as if tobacco were trying to protect itself as much as possible, with its poisonous nicotine and the shape of its inaccessible flowers.
