Acidosis

Definition of the pathology

Acidosis is caused by an overproduction of acid, which accumulates in the blood, or by an excessive loss of bicarbonate in the blood (metabolic acidosis), or by an accumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood due to inadequate lung function or interrupted breathing (respiratory acidosis).

  • Acidity and alkalinity are expressed on the pH scale, which ranges from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic or alkaline). A pH of 7.0, in the middle of the scale, is neutral.
  • Blood is normally slightly alkaline, with a normal pH in the range of 7.35 to 7.45. The body normally maintains the blood pH at around 7.40.
