Definition of the pathology
Thrombosis is the formation of blood clots in veins or arteries that eventually block blood flow and cause symptoms such as pain and swelling at the affected site. The most common type of thrombosis is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs in the veins of the leg, but the clot can also affect other more serious areas, such as the lungs or brain. Depending on the area affected, symptoms can vary greatly, from swelling in the leg to loss of strength in the body or severe difficulty breathing.
