Definition of the pathology
- Ischaemic stroke is the most common type of stroke and occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked. This deprives the affected area of oxygen and prevents it from functioning normally, causing symptoms such as difficulty speaking, a twisted mouth, loss of strength on one side of the body and changes in vision.
- A haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding in the brain, which leads to a build-up of blood and an increase in pressure in the area, preventing blood from flowing to that part of the brain.
