Arthritis

Definition of the pathology

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that causes symptoms such as pain, deformity and stiffness. It is usually treated with medication, physiotherapy and exercise, but in some cases surgery may be needed.

Are arthritis and osteoarthritis the same thing?

  • Arthritis is a term used to describe diseases in which there is inflammation of the joints, which can occur either as a result of ageing or as a result of immunological changes, infection or trauma.
  • Arthrosis, also known as osteoarthritis, is a type of arthritis in which the cartilage wears away, causing friction between the joints and leading to symptoms such as pain, joint stiffness and, in some cases, swelling.
