Definition of the pathology
A herniated disc is characterised by the bulging of an intervertebral disc, which can lead to symptoms such as back pain, burning or numbness. It is most common in the cervical and lumbar spine. A herniated disc can be classified according to the region of the spine that it affects, so it can be:
- Cervical disc herniation: affects the neck region
- Thoracic disc herniation: affects the middle of the back
- Lumbar disc herniation: affects the lower back
