Manuka is a wild bush found only in New Zealand.
The highly fragrant Manuka flowers attract bees to their pollen, producing this creamy honey with a distinctive flavour and colour.
Manuka Honey has been shown to be effective in many areas when taken or applied to the skin.
How do you choose your Manuka Honey?
Methylglyoxal or MGO is the molecule responsible for the antimicrobial activity of honey.
German Professor Thomas Henle has shown in his research that Manuka honey contains 10 times more MGO than conventional honey.
The effectiveness of Manuka Honey is measured by its concentration of active ingredients.
Each laboratory has developed their own system of measurement.
To help you choose your honey according to the different brands and the concentration of the active ingredient you can use the following UMF or MGO indexes:
- MGO 100+ or UMF 10: used for prevention, to stimulate the immune system, to sweeten drinks and to maintain daily health.
- MGO™ 250+ or UMF 15: recommended to fight minor bacterial and fungal infections.
- MGO 400+ or UMF 20: used externally to treat wounds, minor burns, winter illnesses and especially to relieve coughs.
- MGO 550+ or UMF 25: The most powerful, it is used to fight all types of very resistant infections.
