Potassium (K)

Daily dose

The recommended daily dose is between 2g and 6g.

Properties

  • Regulation of osmotic pressure
  • Homeostasis
  • Diuretic
  • Various cellular mechanisms
  • Nerve conduction
  • Contribution to heart rate

Indications

Requirement

  • Heart problems
  • Paralysis (e.g. after diarrhoea or gastroenteritis due to lack of potassium)

Excess

  • Heart problems

Observations

Potassium in ionic form (K+) is an ion that is very present in cells and is actively involved in cellular homeostasis, especially in the heart.

In the case of cramps, potassium intake can help, but generally, with a healthy diet, there is no need to take potassium supplements.
