Vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal thrush)

Definition of the pathology

It is an infection of the genitals caused by a fungus. It is very common, especially in women. The fungus is almost always Candida albicans. The infection is usually endogenous, linked to the development of Candida already present in the vagina or on the skin. It can also occur exogenously, as a result of sexual contamination, in swimming pools, on beaches, etc. However, vaginal candidiasis is not considered a sexually transmitted infection.
