Definition of the pathology

Addison's disease, also known as 'primary adrenal insufficiency' or 'Addison's syndrome', occurs when the adrenal or suprarenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys, stop producing the hormones cortisol and aldosterone, which are responsible for controlling stress, blood pressure and reducing inflammation. A lack of these hormones can lead to weakness, low blood pressure and a general feeling of tiredness.
